Blogging Like It's 2004: The Sabbatical Chronicles

Breaking the Mold: Why…the heck am I Blogging in 2025

Guys, I know it's 2025. I am not sure what I am doing, but here I am writing my first blog post like it's 2004. I know you're wondering, why the heck am I writing a blog in this day and age? There are millions of other mediums I could use to express myself—Instagram, Medium, Substack, YouTube, even Facebook or X. Nowadays you can even post on LinkedIn. Why a blog of all places?

Though I do have Instagram, Facebook, and X, the trend favors shorter posts. I just couldn't fit all my thoughts into 300-400 words. Which is very reasonable if you think about it. Who would want to read a 10,000-word post and hear someone ramble on about the latest updates on their family drama? I didn't want to do that, but neither did I want to restrict my thoughts to short posts. Hence the blog. It gives me enough flexibility to express myself in the way I like without any restrictions.

What You'll Find Here

If you found this blog, you probably know me personally or discovered it through one of my social media accounts. But in a nutshell, I'm an American (San Franciscan to be exact) who has lived in Switzerland for the past 10 years and recently started my career sabbatical as of February 2025. This space will be a mixed bag of my personal journey, career reflections, and things that genuinely interest me.

I'm planning to write about my career sabbatical experiences, books that I have been reading, travel adventures (from traveling across the world to just the coffee shop in town), my mini-quests and creative projects, and occasional deep dives into topics I'm learning about. It will be a little bit all over the place but you will have to bear with me on this. The one thing I will NOT write about is politics or political views as it's something very chaotic and not something I want to delve into during my sabbatical.

If you've known me since my university days, you may recall that this is not my first sabbatical and in fact I did have a blog during that time as well (more on that in a future post). I'm not the best writer but I've always loved documenting things whether through video, pictures, or writing. They've always helped me process life as it happened. Sadly, as I started grad school and life got busy, I lost that habit. So while you might call me old-fashioned, this blog is my attempt to reclaim that space for reflection, but this time with the possibility of more connection and even to showcase what it's like and how to navigate a mid-career sabbatical.

Let's Connect

In my previous blogging experience, it was always a one-way street, but this time I will do my best to get your feedback and thoughts as well. I'd love to hear from you if something resonates. Comments are open on all posts, or you can reach me via email (I do plan to add a contact form on my website).

So here we go—my little corner of the internet in 2025. Oh goodness, I feel like the Gen-Z'ers are already falling asleep reading this. In any case, thanks for stopping by!

Good thing it’s almost spring in Switzerland
